Paychex Safety and Loss Control Dept. FOUR CLASSES OF FIRES CLASS A FIRE EXTINGUISHERS –Ordinary combustibles or fibrous materials. Wood Paper Cloth Rubber –Travel distance for employees to extinguishers is 75 feet.

Paychex Safety and Loss Control Dept. CLASS B FIRE EXTINGUISHERS USE ON FLAMMABLE OR COMBUSTIBLE LIQUIDS. Gasoline Kerosene Paint Paint thinners Propane –Travel distance from class B hazard to any extinguisher is 50 feet.

Paychex Safety and Loss Control Dept. CLASS C FIRE EXTINGUISHERS USE ON ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT Appliances Switches Panel Boxes Power tools –Travel distance from the class C hazard area to any fire extinguisher is 50 feet.

Paychex Safety and Loss Control Dept. ALL FIRE EXTINGUISHERS SHALL BE MAINTAINED: FULLY CHARGED AND OPERABLE CONDITIONS. CLEAN AND FREE OF DEFECTS. READILY ACCESSIBLE AT ALL TIMES.

Paychex Safety and Loss Control Dept. INSPECTION, MAINTENANCE, AND TESTING MONTHLY VISUAL INSPECTION. ANNUAL MAINTENANCE CHECK. SIX (6) YEAR TEAR DOWN MAINTENANCE. TWELVE (12) YEAR HYDROSTATIC TEST. EXTINGUISHERS ARE PROMPTLY RECHARGED. EXTINGUISHERS ARE COMPATIBLE.

If there is a choice between life and property. If you’re unsure if you can handle the situation. If you are injured and it will impede your escape. If the extinguisher is not designed for the type fire. If any drums, gases, and like materials are engulfed.
