Engaging Students in Online Courses Susan Mircovich Kenai Peninsula College University of Alaska Anchorage scmircovich@kpc.alaska.edu
2
Session Objectives Create activities to engage students in your online lecture and laboratory courses Agenda First - lecture examples from chem Second - lab examples from chem, physics and A&P
3
What is “active learning”? Students engage material: talking, writing, reading, reflecting, or questioning Students are doing things - opposite of passively watching lectures Students are engaged and involved in the learning process Active Learning: learning occurs teacher-to- student, student-to-teacher, and student-to- student. Involves cognitive activity
4
“active learning” components = 4 Student – content Student– faculty Student– student Interaction
5
“active learning” components = 5 Student – content Student– faculty Student– student Interaction games, puzzles, Learning Objects, self-check quizzes, video lectures with handouts/worksheets, assignments, animations, problems, case studies, HW problems, student created content, essays introductions, study groups, group assignments – optional or mandatory, DB, Wiki report comments, email, phone, games, synchronous meetings, test questions on student content, LAB work! DB, recorded introduction, personalized feedback on assignments and tests – written, audio and video, phone, synchronous sessions, prompt email replies, surveys and feedback
6
Online Lecture Do’s Your voiceReadableInteractive ImagesBranchQuiz Chunk
7
Online Lecture Dont’s PPTs w/no audio > 15 minute Reread the textbook Outline only of f2f lecture Folder of documents

9
More Examples - Intro to Org &Bio Protein Wiki = student created content Use for exam questions! Example
10
More Examples - General Chem II DB – students help each other. Students can subscribe for email notifications Example
11
Distance Labs = any combination – students work with kits – online interactive simulations – robotics to control equipment/do experiments, take measurements – any above with on campus combo At home Virtual Remote Hybrid/ Blended
12
University of Minnesota Center for Allied Health Programs* Uses “blended” model: –distance learning, classroom experiences, experiential education –supported by technology; simulations, videoconferencing, or teleconferencing * “Blended Learning: Emerging Best Practices in Allied Health Workforce” Development Journal of Allied Health, Winter 2010, Vol 39, No 4 (in your packet) 12

Back on After completing this lab you will be able to: write the correct symbols or names of some elements categorize elements as metals or non metals identify chemical families in the periodic table determine the mass number, atomic number, and number of protons, neutrons and electrons given the complete symbol of an atom interpret the trends in atomic radii, electronegativity and density within a family and a period of the periodic table write an electron configuration for an element describe the importance of radioactive isotopes in medical diagnosis techniques 21 LO Content/Activities Chem 103L KPC Interactive Periodic Table Example

Confirm the first order approximation for the period of a simple pendulum By measuring the periods for various pendulum lengths, determine the acceleration due to gravity g. (Do not use a published value for g in your calculations – the objective is that you will measure and compute it yourself.) 24 LO Andy Veh Physics KPC Pendulum Experiment
