Adverbs Modify (describe) a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
Most words that end in –ly are adverbs. Not and n’t are always adverbs Most adverbs modify verbs. If the verb being modified is part of a verb phrase, the adjective modifies the whole phrase. Example: My friends will be gone soon. What is the adverb? What is it modifying?

Adverbs answer questions
How? When the football was snapped, Troy moved quickly and made the tackle. When? He celebrated after making the play. How often? Mr. Swartos never assigns too much homework. Where? It is here. To what extent? After football Troy was very tired.

What is it modifying? Adverbs that modify verbs can be anywhere in the sentence, they do not need to be near the words they modify. Adverbs that modify adjectives or other adverbs are usually found right before the word they modify.

You try it! Tell me what each adverb modifies in the following sentences. Billy is too tall. Quickly he finished his homework. Tommy moved quite slowly. My friends will be gone soon.
