10% A brief history and some of its successes

The Origin of 10% 10% started on the December of 2006 when a group of students and teachers decided to do something about the massive $1.7 million dollar electricity bill each year. When divided up, the cost would be $9,500 spent on electricity bills EACH DAY. The effort paid off. After delivering countless speeches towards the Student Body, putting up numerous posters around the school, setting up promotional materials on the Internet and designing 10% desktop interfaces, the 2007 electricity bill was 14% less than the 2006 electricity bill.

The graph of how much 10% saved The area between the lines is how much money 10% saved.

Current and future initiatives Currently, 10%’s main initiative is to save 20% instead of the original 10%. Therefore, the target amount would be saving $340,000. With all the money saved, 10% can focus on its future initiatives for electricity reduction and ways to improve the environment. They include: Putting up solar panels on top of KGV ’ s roofs to provide electricity. This electricity would then be used for lighting, heating etc. Putting up solar panels on top of KGV ’ s roofs to provide electricity. This electricity would then be used for lighting, heating etc. Recycling water from showers for flushing. Recycling water from showers for flushing. And many more … And many more … However, many people think that the new initiative of saving 20% of the school’s electricity bill may not be achievable. The next slide is a pie chart which shows what people think about the initiative.

What people think about the new initiative of saving 20% of the school’s electricity bill

What are some of the successes of 10%? During 2007 and 2008, after seeing the success of 10% in reducing the electricity bill, more and more students joined 10%. Currently, there are over 110 members from 10%. Compared with only 15 starting members, 10% has been a huge success. In addition, 10% has spread to many different ESF schools. Primary schools were sent there own packs to start 10% and Secondary schools are on their way. 10% even has links with electricity providers such as CLP and Hong Kong Electric.

What are some of the successes of 10%? One of 10%’s many successes recently was the Environmental Fair organised by the British Council on October 11 th. KGV, represented by some of 10%’s members (including me!), went and talked about what was being done at their school. We showed our audience posters that were at school made to remind people what to do to reduce effects of Global Warming etc. We also showed the many presentations and videos to our audience. We were so good that South China Morning Post interviewed us and put us on the newspaper! The article about the Environmental Fair on the South China Morning Post website

What are some of the successes of 10%? Another great success of 10% is the cooperation with the PTSA. The PTSA has funded many of 10%’s projects including posters, banners, stickers, badges and covers for switches. In total, the PTSA funded 75% of 10%’s projects in 2007. In conclusion, I think that 10% is a highly successful project with the potential to expand throughout Hong Kong’s schools. 10% has a high capability and will bring a greener future to KGV.
