1 DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE By: Michaela Watson

2 What is it?  Not actually a disease.  A term used to describe normal changes.  Spinal discs are soft, compressible discs that separate the interlocking bones of the spine (vertebrae.)  Shock absorbers.  Vertebras' allow the spine to flex, bend, and twist.

3 Where?  Any where in the spine. - Neck region (cervical) -Lower back (lumbar)

4 Causes  Normal as you age.  More likely to occur in people who smoke or who do heavy lifting.  Disc begin to break down (degenerate.)  Age related causes include: Loss of fluid in your discs. Tiny tears or cracks in the otter layer of the discs.

5 Symptoms  Back or neck pain.  Pain in the arms if affected disc is in the neck.  Pain in the legs or buttocks if affected disc is in the lower back.  Pain increases with bending over, reaching up, or twisting.  Pain may start after a major or minor injury. Or normal motion.

6 Diagnosis  Medical history  Physical exam  Doc. Asks about symptoms, injuries, or illnesses.  Check range of motion in affected area.  Area tenderness  Checks for other problems such as fractures, tumors, and infections.  X-rays not likely.

7 Treatment  Ice or heat on affected area  Use acetaminophen  Physical therapy is often recommended.  Surgery
