1 Using Pronouns Correctly I can use a subject or object pronoun correctly in a sentence.

2 What do pronouns do? Pronouns replace common or proper nouns in sentences. Why? They help to avoid repetition of the same words over and over. Joey darted to the car, and Joey retrieved the science textbook Joey left there after school. Joey was thankful the textbook was still there. Joey is used FOUR times in two sentences! Textbook is used twice. How can this be improved with pronouns?

4 Case 1:  Use these pronouns as the SUBJECT of a sentence.

5 Examples of Pronouns in the Subject Rachel owns a collection of antique toys. Replace Rachel: She owns a collection of antique toys. Jim and Lydia enjoy a night at the theatre. Replace Jim and Lydia: They enjoy a night at the theatre.

6 Case 2:  Also use subject pronouns AFTER a linking verb.  For example: The winner is she.

8 More examples after LVs  Jason’s best friends are they.  The person for the job was she.  If you are looking for Mrs. Worsham, I am she.  The last ones to arrive were we.  Hello?...This is he.

9 Compound Subjects  when there are two or more nouns or pronouns in the subject  If it is a person’s name and a pronoun, always put the name first.  Still use a subject pronoun. For example: Richard and I recited the fable.

10 Compound Subjects More examples: Yoshi and he will be late to class. Harold and she passed a note. Todd and we are meeting at 7:00. Rapha and they are unable to attend.

11 Object Pronouns  Use these pronouns after an ACTION VERB and after a PREPOSITION. me him her them it you us

12 Object Pronouns  For example: Gina mailed her a get well card. Herman called us and asked a question. Aaron passed the ball to him, and he made the shot.

13 Practice Tell (them, they) about your favorite book.

14 Practice When the travelers arrived, (they, them) were weary from their journey.

15 Practice (She, Her) will present her report to the class.

16 Practice Brandon and (we, us) think the quiz will be today.

17 Practice The person at the door is (she, her).

18 Practice The teachers who gave a test are (them, they).

19 Practice The other students and (I, me) do not agree with you.

20 Practice George and (they, them) will go to the movies tonight.

21 Practice Tammy and (we, us) have plans for the weekend.

22 Practice Give the papers to (I, me).
