1 Implementation Guide for Synonym/Antony m Alex Judah ESPED 6119 E. Stringer Keefe

2 Introduction Prior to introducing the concepts of synonyms and antonyms, the teacher must identify predetermined set of vocabulary words to use as examples and during the Bingo game Teacher will ensure that each student has their vocabulary index cards with the correct definition and PEC picture

3 Create Examples! Teacher will create example worksheets for each student to keep at their desk o These examples will utilize vocabulary which is concurrent with recent lessons but may not have been taught yet o This will be utilized for when the teacher introduces the topic of context clues Teacher will write the definitions of synonyms and antonyms on the board in addition to the predetermined examples

4 I do it… Teacher will then model and lead the class discussion of what a synonym is, what an antonym is, and using them in sentences

5 Practice, practice, practice Students will then practice identifying synonyms and antonyms using their vocabulary index cards and creating sentences Students will write down their examples on the story paper and create a corresponding picture o Students who are not able to write their sentence without significant assistance from the teacher/aides will create a sentence using appropriate Boardmaker/PEC pictures

6 How do we play? Teacher will then explain the game of Bingo o How to play it o What constitutes a “Bingo” Teacher will then model how to fill in the Bingo board worksheet o Writing or gluing Boardmaker/PECs pictures Teacher and aides will assist students in filling out their Bingo board worksheet either on a physical piece of paper or on their Tablet PC o Students will be able to download the template from the class Cloud or sent via email prior to beginning this activity.

7 Practice, practice, practice Teacher will then provide examples of “announcing” a word and that students must find the corresponding synonym and putting a “marker”/counter/digital X on top of the correct space Teacher will model that students are able to use their vocabulary index cards to identify a given synonym or antonym

8 Playing the game Teacher will then play a round of Bingo by finding synonyms or antonyms Depending on the student’s abilities, teacher may begin a game using only synonyms, antonyms or a combination of the two.

9 Accommodations & Modifications Students will be able to utilize supports from aides within the classroom Modified bingo worksheets o Large enough squares to fit their handwriting o PEC pictures and glue for students to place throughout their bingo worksheets Access to a dictionary appropriate to each student’s abilities’ o Picture or traditional Access to a Tablet PC for students to write/place pictures on their own bingo boards o Tablet PCs should also be preloaded with dictionary/thesaurus apps so that students will be able to look up a vocabulary word Students will also have access to a modified word list if needed Students will also be able to work in small groups of two or three
