Jump Shooting A jump shot is a shot that is released after the shooter has jumped, usually straight up off of two feet, into the air. The ball is usually shot with a high arc. For pictures of a jump shot….

Lay Ups A Lay up is a shot taken around the basket by leaping up under the basket and using one hand to bank the ball off the backboard into the basket. Pictures of some sweet layups….

Dunk A dunk is when a player close to the basket jumps and strongly throws the ball down into the rim. It can be done with one or two hands. Basketball players must be very athletic and be able to jump very high in order to do this. Check out these slam dunks!

Bounce Pass A bounce pass is a pass that strikes the floor before it reaches the receiver. Ideally the pass hits the floor about halfway between the passer and target. The pass is generally the slowest type of pass of the three we will talk about today. Lets look at some pictures of bounce passes.

The Chest Pass A chest pass is a two-handed pass thrown from the passer’s chest in a straight line to the chest area of the receiver. It is the fastest pass of the three we will talk about today. Lets look at some chest passes.

Overhead Pass The overhead pass is a pass that is thrown from over the passers head to a teammate. Players will use this pass to get the ball down the court in a hurry. Here are a couple examples of the overhead pass.

Field Goals When the ball enters the basket from above the shooting team is awarded 2 points. Teams are awarded 3 points when the shooter has both feet on the floor behind the 3-point line when he released the ball. Here is a picture of the basketball court 2 point areas and 3 point areas.

The shaded area is where the team can shoot from and receive three points. The white area is where a team can shoot from and receive two points.

Free Throws A free throw is an unguarded shot taken from the foul line by a player whose opponent committed a foul. Free throws are worth 1 point each.
