About UWS Located in Portland, Oregon, the University of Western States (UWS) has been a leader in conservative health care education since 1904, featuring the second oldest chiropractic physician program in the world.

What is Chiropractic Health Care? Chiropractic is a licensed health care profession that seeks to optimize human function and support the inherent recuperative abilities of the body. Chiropractic care includes manual procedures, lifestyle counseling, nutritional therapy, exercise, and rehabilitative modalities.

What do Chiropractic Physicians Do? Chiropractic physicians practice a whole patient, hands-on approach to health care that includes examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractic physicians have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling.

UWS Doctor of Chiropractic Program The Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree program is a four-year first-professional doctorate program. Students master the complexities and intricacies of treating the whole patient, achieving clinical experience by learning and applying evidence-informed approaches to health care.

Students entering the Doctor of Chiropractic Degree Program after 3 years of undergraduate study will earn an accredited B.S. Degree in Human Biology from UWS at the conclusion of the 5 th quarter. This qualifies students to study M.S. programs while completing the D.C. degree. B.S. Degree Completion DCP Pathway

For students that enter the D.C. degree program with 3 years of study, UWS has partnered with several accredited institutions, allowing those students to transfer back dually attributable classes and to receive the Bachelor’s degree from their “home” institution. 3+1 Partnership Agreements DCP Pathway

Massage Therapy UWS Massage Therapy Program The massage therapy field is growing rapidly, and the job opportunities for Licensed Massage Therapists continues to expand. Increasingly, people are seeking the therapeutic benefits of massage to reduce stress and alleviate pain. Research has documented the significant health benefits of massage, making massage a vital part of any integrative approach to healthcare.

UWS Massage Therapy Program Massage therapists work in medical clinics, chiropractic clinics, physical therapy offices, hospitals, wellness centers, and health spas. Some therapists establish private practices, and others provide services at health resorts and athletic clubs. The massage program is a 1 year, 48.5 credit certificate program in clinical massage therapy. The UWS Massage Therapy Program seeks to provide graduates the skills necessary to work within a multidisciplinary healthcare team and contribute meaningfully to the whole patient health.

UWS Massage Therapy Program Students learn to evaluate each client individually based on informed assessment methods and client goals. Massage techniques increase mobility, reduce stiffness and pain, improve circulation, decrease stress, complement other medical treatments and promote overall wellness.

Students may enter the accredited UWS Massage Therapy Program with a high school diploma or a GED completion. Accredited credits from the UWS Massage Therapy Program apply to the Associates Degree at specific Community Colleges. UWS Massage Therapy Massage Therapy prerequisites

Students enter the UWS Massage Therapy Program after graduation from high school (or GED completion). UWS Massage Therapy Program Credits apply toward the completion of an A.S. (2 year) Degree at a community college. 3rd year of study can be completed at UWS (online and classroom studies). Student qualifies for entry to UWS D.C. degree program. Master’s Degree MS in Exercise and Sports Science The Master of Science in Exercise and Sports Science prepares the graduate to specialize in sports-related health care. Graduates may choose to work with amateur, school, college or professional athletes, in a sports medicine clinic, or as a team physician. Students complete in-depth courses in sports medicine and injury management, culminating in a capstone experience of caring for athletes.

M.S. in Exercise and Sports Science Currently the UWS M.S. in Exercise and Sports Science program is available to students that are simultaneously enrolled in the Doctor of Chiropractic degree program. Beginning Fall 2012, licensed chiropractic physicians will be able to enroll in the M.S. degree program.

Master’s Degree M.S. in Nutrition and Functional Medicine The UWS Masters of Science in Nutrition and Functional Medicine program integrates Clinical Nutrition with the systems biology approach of Functional Medicine.

MS in Nutrition and Functional Medicine Functional medicine is a patient-centered, systems biology approach to the prevention, diagnosis, and management of complex chronic diseases. Functional medicine seeks to explore and identify underlying imbalances and disturbances that contribute to the development of various chronic diseases, and to improve those disorders to optimize human function and promote health. The Master of Science in Nutrition and Functional Medicine program is primarily delivered online.

UWS Health Care Clinics UWS clinics provide quality health care services to members of our local communities. Our clinical model delivers patient- focused, evidence-informed care that is individualized for each person. These specialized settings provide clinical training for student interns under the supervision and mentorship of qualified, experienced and caring licensed professionals.
