The beginning ● December 16, 1944 o Hitler began counterattack to D-Day through the Ardennes and Antwerp surprise blitzkrieg o Started from breaking weakened American lines o American troops= 830,000 o German troops= 500,000

During the German attack ● U.S left the Ardennes lightly defended o Hitler took advantage o quarter million troops attacked o Hitler gave all resources to troops there ● Allies had less resistance to cross Ardennes o Only lightly defended the Ardennes o German troops attack was meant to try to split Allied armies

U.S. resistance ● Lt. Gen. Patton o Led defense against german army o Controlled: 101st Airborne division and Third Army o Entered and fought in Bastogne, Belgium o Pushed all German troops out of Belgium on December 26 o First army began counter offensive on January 3rd

The end of the battle ● January 16, 1945 ● German casualties= 100,000 ● American casualties= 81,000 ● Ended as an unsuccessful push of Allies out of German home territory

VE-Day ● End of the 6 years of suffering ● May 8th, 1945 ● Started after Hitler’s suicide on April 30, 1945 that marked the end of the war ● Big celebration!!!

Analysis This battle impacted the U.S. by having the largest number of men deployed overseas to help end the battle which allowed multiple jobs to open so the resources of the troops could be made. The Battle of the Bulge also showed and allowed Europe to end German reign after the six years of suffering caused by Hitler’s power in World War II.
