* What is a Pronoun? What is a Pronoun?

* A word that renames or replaces a noun that has been previously mention. Think about it this way, when we have conversations about a person, do we keep using their name over and over??

* If pronouns did not exist: * Payne Stewart was a popular golfer. Payne Steward died in a plane crash in 1999. Payne Stewart, along with the pilot and the passengers in Payne Stewart’s plane, lost consciousness.

* Payne Stewart is the noun in the sentence. We don’t repeat his name over and over. Instead, we SUBSTITUTE his name with pronouns. * Payne Stewart was a popular golfer. He died in a plane crash in 1999. He, along with the pilot and the passengers in his plane, lost consciousness

* In the example, you saw the words “he” and “his” take place of the name Payne Stewart. Each of those words were pronouns. We use pronouns all the time, yet we don’t always register it.

* There is also something called “cases” when it comes to pronouns. * Nominative case=subjective case—the pronoun functions as the central noun of the sentence, also called “the subject” * Objective case—the pronoun is a second noun, related to the verb of the sentence. * Possessive case—the pronoun signals ownership

* Here’s what matters—identifying a pronoun, regardless of what kind. * Sally is a gardener. She participates in the community garden. * It happens to me on a regular basis. * We drive to school every day. * They were late for class. * If you don’t hurry, you’ll miss the bus.

* It’s important to know what noun is being replaced by the pronoun. * The noun in the sentence being replaced b the pronoun is called the antecedent. * Liam was late to his class. WHO is this sentence talking about? Liam (antecedent) What pronoun replaced Liam’s name? His

* Lisa is allergic to cats. She can’t be around them. * The picture was colorful. It was taken by an amateur. * The guests will arrive soon. They will need keys to their rooms. * My nephew Jordan went hunting for deer. He killed three of them.

She can’t be around them. antecedent: Lisa Pronoun: She Antecedent: Cats Pronoun: Them * LISA is the subject of the sentence, it’s who the sentence is talking about. * CATS are the objects of the sentence. They’re nouns too, but they receive an action of the verb—they answer WHAT Lisa is allergic to.

* My nephew Jordan went hunting for deer. He killed three of them. JORDAN is the subject of the sentence. What did Jordan do? Went hunting Hunting for what? DEER Object of the sentence.
