Many Galician surnames have become Castilianized over the centuries, especially after the forced submission of the Galician nobility obtained by the Catholic Monarchs in the last years of the 15th century. This reflected the gradual spread of Spanish language, through the cities, in Santiago de Compostela, Vigo, Ferrol, A Coruña and Lugo.
