Two Step Word Problems
Intermediate Math
CCS: 3.OA.3 Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays and measurement quantities, eg., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
This activity requires the students to solve four 2-step word problems. Please discuss the Anchor Chart with the students prior to usage at the station and put several copies of the Anchor Chart at the stations. You will also need to include manipulatives and hundred charts for differentiation. In addition, blank activity cards are included for your use.

3. Two Question Problems
Maris has 5 blue notebooks and 3 red notebooks. How many notebooks does he have altogether? Each notebook costs $3. Maris’ mom gave him $30 to buy his notebooks. How much money will Maris give back to his mom?
Problem 1 – 5 blue notebooks plus 3 red notebooks =?
5 blue notebooks plus 3 red notebooks = 8 notebooks
Problem 2 – Each notebook costs $3. Maris’ mom gave him $30 to buy his notebooks. How much money will Maris give back to his mom?
8 notebooks times $3 = $24 – Multiply the eight notebooks times the 3 dollars and you get 24 dollars.
If Maris has $30 and the notebooks cost $24 you have to subtract.
30 – 24 = 6 So Maris will give his mom 6 dollars.
