Civil Law Questions Q#1 – Define “Tort,” and give 3 examples TORT: Injuries done by one person to another’s body, property, or reputation and claims arising from serious accidents. Holds a person or organization responsible for the damage caused by their actions to another person. i.e. Battery (hitting), trespass to land, trespass to good, negligence, false imprisonment

Civil Law Questions Q#3 – How can an offence be both a crime and a tort? Give an example An offence can be a crime AND a tort because… It may be a criminal act which is prosecuted in court but may also be a civil issue between two people i.e. DUI – criminal and civil for injuries sustained.

Civil Law Questions Q#4 – identify the main purpose of tort law Main purpose is to compensate the victim for injuries sustained or for losses suffered from the tort

Civil Law Questions Q#5 – Explain how a judgment in a tort action might also contain an element of deterrence If the legal action generates considerable negative publicity for the defendant and if the court were to award a large cash settlement
