Morphing verbs In the preterite tense, there are a group of irregular verbs that are referred to as morphing verbs. Morphing verbs are verbs that completely change their stem. There are 3 groups of morphing verbs: u- stems i- stems j- stems Because morphing verbs are irregular, none of the conjugated forms have written accents. All morphing verbs, no matter what kind of stem they have, use the same endings.

Irregular i-stem verbs *hacer querer venir h i c- qu i s- v i n- The third person singular form of HACER is HIZO. The «c» changes to «z» to preserve the original sound of the verb.

Irregular j-stem verbs conducir decir traer condu j - di j - tra j -

Apuntes importantes * Most verbs that end in –cir have j-stems in the preterite. Other examples include traducer (to translate) and producer (to produce). The third person plural ending of j-stem verbs drop the i. (dijeron, trajeron)
