Emerging developments in the field of automatic identification Henri Barthel Technical Director EPCglobal EAN International

EAN International (soon named GS1)  Set up in 1977 as not for profit international association with Head Office in Brussels  12 founding members from European countries  Today global network of Member Organisations in more than 100 countries  More than 1,000,000 companies worldwide participate in the EANUCC system

Bar codes and Data Example of A Single Dimension or Linear Barcode  Barcode is the means by which a number is represented for automatic data capture  EAN number is a unique non-significant number

Bar codes family Product ID, trade Logistics, traceability Some Logistic applications Very small items, healthcare

Bar-coding benefits  Eliminates error prone and time consuming tasks such as manual data collection  Increased accuracy  Effortless Tracking  Basis for introduction of other technologies

Electronic transactions Electronic Data Interchange Scanning goods received and sold Physical delivery of goods

EAN.UCC simplifies Supply Chains Mfg Item Case Pallets Trucks Distributor Trucks Pallets Case Item Destination User EAN.UCC Standard Bar Code Links the Physical Flow to Information Flow

EPC and EPCglobal Network

RFID/EPC TM Moving from Barcodes/EAN...To RFID/EPC TM Source: EDS (RFID graphics) & Auto-ID Center (EPC graphics)

From “Research” to “Real World” ResearchCommercialization Initiated at MIT Partnership between 100 global firms and 6 Universities: MIT, US Cambridge, UK Keio, Japan Fudan, China Adelaide, Australia St Gallen, Switzerland Continued Research Standards Development Manage the Network Implementation support Communication & Marketing Policies (Privacy, Intellectual Property) 1999 to 2003Since November 2003

The EPCglobal Network Infrastructure ID reader computers telemetry EPC - electronic product code ONS - Object Naming Service data ID telemetry Internet EPC Information Services RFID tag

The Electronic Product Code A number …………………. In a radio tag … …which together, uniquely identifies an object

The EPCglobal Network EPC Information Service (PML) ONS Middleware Readers Tag Enterprise Applications Integration Layer ERP Warehouse Management Systems Inventory Management Data Warehouse Merchandise Management Store Systems Etc. EPC Network  Information stored on EPC IS, Accessed through ONS  Middleware between readers and information systems  Inexpensive tags  Minimum data on the tag

RFID Technology in the Supply Chain Receiving document completion Improved material tracking Line-of-sight scanning eliminated Multiple items scanned at once Item identification within manufacturing operations

Leveraging EPCglobal Network  Enables real-time, automatic identification of items in the supply chain  Allows manufacturers and distributors to move and control inventory flow  Increases responsiveness to consumer demand  Provides increased accuracy and visibility at all points in the supply chain  Facilitates an open, collaborative environment with trading partners

EPCglobal Governance

EPC/RFID: Early Adopters

Conclusions  Automatic Identification technologies combined with Electronic Data Interchange are established  They enable tracking and tracing of goods in supply chains  The EPCglobal network combining Radio Frequency Identification and global access to distributed data will provide another dimension to collaborative commerce, to traceability and to food safety
