New Years Eve is important celebration in Romania.It is sometimes called “little Christmas". Traditional small decorated plough called a “plugsorul” is paraded through the streets on New Years Eve. It means to help have good crops for the following year. One New Years day children wish people a Happy New Year while carrying a special called a “sarcoma” it was made from twigs from one or more fruit trees like apple,pear,cherry,or plum.They put into water in warm place on November 30 th,so they will hopefully blossom on New Years!!!!

In Romania Christmas and mid winter celebrations last from December 20 th till January 7 th.The 20 th is when people in Romania celebrate ST. Ignatius Day it is a tradition that if the family keeps pigs one is killed on this day. The meat from the pig is used for the Christmas meals. Romania Christmas celebrations really begin on Christmas Eve. Nowadays people often single twigs out of an apple or pear tree. Trees are used and decorated with colored paper.

The Christmas celebrations really begin on Christmas Eve on the 25 th when its time to decorate the Christmas trees. This is done on the evening of Christmas Eve which is called “Ajani craciunului”caroling singing is known as “colindatuld” is also very popular part of Christmas in Romania. On Christmas Eve children go out on carol singing from house to house preforming0 to the adults. They normally dance as well. The children usually get sweets, fruit,cakes called “colonic "and sometimes for singing well. Adults go carol singing on Christmas day,evening,and night.

The star carol on a pole and made of colored paper often decorated with tinsel, silver foil, and sometimes bells. In the middle of the star is a picture of a baby Jesus or a nativity scene carol singers take the star with them when they go carol singing. The words of the stars are: the star has appeared on high the star is bright may all your wishes turn out right.

Other popular carols include “oh what wondrous tiding “and three wise men coming from the East. In many parts of Romania it is also tradition that someone dresses as a goat with a multi-colored mask and goes around with the carol singers the goat is known as the capra and it jumps and dances around getting up to lots of mischief.

Another Christmas Eve tradition is drumming band or “DUBASI” this is normally made up of married men. A band can get up to 50 or 60 men in it!!!! as well as drums. The band will practice for about a month before Christmas so they so they are good and ready. They go around the streets and are given presents.
