Let’s Learn About the Basic Needs of Plants! What Does a Plant Need to Grow? By: Elizabeth Vorst 2015 EDT 365

What Are You Going To Learn? In this lesson you will see what three basic needs of plants are. You will also learn what a plant needs in order to survive. Have fun! Teacher Information

Directions Click on the back arrow to go back to the previous slide. Click on the forward arrow to move to the next slide Follow all of the directions on the screen in order to complete the lesson! Most of all, HAVE FUN!

MENU Click on the watering can to learn about the first need!

MENU Water Soil Click on the sun the learn about the last basic need!

MENU Quiz Summary Water Soil Sun

MENU Water Click on the soil to learn about the second need! Or click on the watering can to review

Need #1: Water Water helps plants carry all of their nutrients to the different parts of plants. Plants need to transport nutrients to all their different parts. This includes the stem, the leaves, and the roots.

How Does Water Travel? Water travels through the roots first. The roots soak up all the nutrients and water around them and carry them up. The water then travels through the stem. The stem then distributes the water to the leaves and branches.

Too Much or Too Little Water Be careful! If you have too much water the roots can rot. This makes it impossible for the roots to soak up any more nutrients and the plant will die. If you have too little water the plant can not carry all the nutrients it needs. Too much water Just the right amount!

Need #2: Soil One of the main functions of soil is that it provides nutrients. Plants need nutrients to help them grow. Without nutrients the plants cannot survive.

Soil Provides a Home Soil is a plants home! Just like we have a home to live in, plants have soil to live in. Plants need a place that their roots can grow and stretch. If the roots cannot grow, then the rest of the plant will not grow!

Try This! Click on the Website Below! I want to see how good you are at knowing what a plant needs to grow! Click on the flower that says “Can you help the seed grow?”. Once you are done come back to the lesson and click the menu button. Menu

Need #3: Sun Plants need sunlight to maintain a warm temperature. If they get too cold then they will freeze and will not be able to grow. However, if they get too hot then their water will absorb and the plant will shrivel up.

Sun helps the plants make their own food! Unlike humans, plants make their own food! They take the energy from the sun and combine it with water and nutrients to make food! This process is called photosynthesis, and without it life would not be possible!

Let’s Play A Game Click on the website about below and see if you can help the plant grow! Remember what we talked about, too much or too little water can hurt the plant! Once you are done click on the menu button and take the quiz! Menu

Quiz Time This quiz is to just see how much you have learned! Once you are done you may return to the menu to review what we have learned or you can exit the lesson. Good Luck!
