3 What is Digital Storytelling? A “new medium” that combines the tradition of storytelling with digital technology Digital stories can be as creative or simple as you want to make them It is often based on a short video or song, but can be anything digital You will need images, sound, and a story to tell

6 Let’s watch an example! The Great Buffalo Pull A digital retelling of the trickster tale “Deceptive Tug-of- War” (Aarne-Thompson) adapted from West African (Anansi), African American (Brer Rabbit), and Native American Muscogee versions retold by Michael Thompson and S.E. Scholosser. GSLIS alum Ana Holland created this wonderful digital story, and it was showcased in the 2013 GSLIS Storytelling Festival.

7 How to Create a Digital Story Start with a Story! Begin thinking of the purpose of your story Are you trying to inform, convince, provoke, question? Where to find Inspiration? Fairy Tales, Folktales, Fables, Legends and Myths… Oh my! Short Stories Podcasts This American Life And many more!

9 One Word: Storyboard A storyboard is a sketch of how to organize a story and a list of its contents. 10 Lights, Camera, Action! iMovie Windows Media Player Import your content Images, videos, sound effects, background music etc. Arrange the content to mirror your storyboard Record narrative either in the program or separately (import to audio editor like Audacity)Audacity
