2  A command is used in order to tell someone what to do.  Example: clean your room!! Command

3  You see a lot of commands used in advertising:

4  The most common command is the informal (tú) command. This is usually used by a parent to a child:  İcome más verduras! (eat more vegetables) or between friends telling them to do something: ¡Pasea en bici! (take your bike)

5  Commands include do’s (positive commands) and don’ts (negative commands).

6  Conjugate the verb in the tú present tense and then drop the S. Example:  If you want to tell a friend to walk:  1. The verb is CAMINAR  2. Conjugate in the tú present tense  CAMINAS  3. Drop the S  CAMINA  4. The tú command for Walk! is  ¡Camina!  * You could also remember that the tú positive command conjugates the same as the él/ella/ud. Present tense

7  Conjugate the following into the positive tú command:  Eat!   Sleep   Sing   Run 

8  To command someone NOT to do something (negative tú commands)  Conjugate the verb in the yo present tense. If verb is an -AR, make the ending -ES. If the verb is –ER/-IR, make ending -AS.  If you want to tell a friend not to smoke:  1. The verb is FUMAR  2. Conjugate in the yo present tense  FUMO  3. Switch the O to ES  FUMES  4. Add the NO to make it negative  ¡no fumes!  If you want to tell a friend not to run:  1. the verb is CORRER  2. Conjugate in the yo present tense  CORRO  3. Switch the O to AS  CORRAS  4. Add the no to make it negative  ¡no corras!

9  Conjugate the following into the negative tú command:  Don’t Eat!   Don’t Sleep   Don’t Sing   Don’t Run 

10  The verb is DISFRUTAR (to enjoy)  Conjugate in the tú present tense  DISFRUTAS  Drop the S  Disfruta is the positive command telling you to enjoy your smoothie with fruit.

11  CAR/GAR verbs…  Verbs ending in GAR are spelled with GU instead of G (only in the negative form) Example:  The negative tú command of jugar is “NO JUEGUES” (not “no jueges”)  Verbs ending in CAR are spelled with QU instead of C (only in the negative form) Example:  The negative tú command of practicar is “NO PRACTIQUES” (not “no practices)
