Honey Bee Lesson Plan Jessica Wells

Science & Art Standards  Science 1) GLE 0007.1.1 Recognize that many things are made of parts  Art 1) GLE 1.1 Use selected tools and media in a safe manner.

Art SPI’s  1.1.2 Demonstrate the use of teacher selected tools and media in a safe manner.  1.1.3 Demonstrate precision in the use of teacher selected tools and media in a safe manner.

Checks for Understanding (Formative/Summative Assess.)  1.1 Demonstrate developmentally appropriate use of tools and media. (e.g., scissors, glue, pencils, markers, crayons, paint brushes, paint, paper.) Use tools in a safe manner.  1.2 Paint, glue, cut, sculpt, draw, collage, and print at a developmentally appropriate level.

 1.3 Demonstrate developmentally appropriate knowledge of art processes (e.g., painting, printing, mixed media.)  1.4 Produce artwork with developmentally appropriate craftsmanship.

Materials  Dark orange/brownish orange construction paper (bee body)  White construction paper/copy paper/plastic overhead sheets (for wings)  Gray/Black construction paper (for legs)  pipe cleaners (for antennae)  Black marker  glue stick  scissors

Materials  Stapler  9” white paper plates (for bee hat)  Letter size white paper (for bee hat)  honey bee pattern

Lesson (step by step) 1. Distribute a copy of the Activity Sheet 1 pattern to each student for a template. (Or have the bee pattern already traced onto the correct pieces of construction paper) 2. Show students how to cut out their body parts using the sample bee you have prepared.

Cutting out the bee body

Lesson Plan (Step by Step) 3. After we have all the parts of the bee body cut out, we will then glue the parts of the body together so that the thorax overlaps the abdomen by about 1/3 inch and the head overlaps the thorax the same amount.

Gluing the bee body

Lesson (step by step) 4. Then count out the correct number of wings (2 for a one-sided bee) and glue them in their correct positions onto the honey bee body (on the thorax, with the smaller under wing under and behind the larger fore-wing.)

Gluing on the wings

Lesson (step by step) 5. We will then glue the legs of the honey bee onto the body and use the pipe cleaners for antennae. 6. Next, draw compound eyes on the head with a black marker. Students should also draw a few bands around the abdomen, starting about halfway down and filling in the entire end portion.

Gluing on legs and antennae Drawing eyes and stripes

Lesson (step by step) 7. Then instruct students to cut the center from the paper plate so they are left with only the outside edge forming a ring and have them cut the letter-size paper lengthwise into one-inch wide strips.

Cutting the plate and paper strips for the hat

Lesson (step by step) 8. Cross two strips across the opening of the plate and staple on each side. 9. Last, Staple or paste construction paper bees to either the top or the outside edge, as student desires.

Stapling hat together and putting bee on hat

Finished Product Bee Hat!!
