Fables… Are a type of folk literature, which means they were handed down in the oral tradition.

Fables… Are known for being very brief, or short, tales. Are called cautionary tales, because they teach a lesson. The lesson is sometimes stated outright in this famous phrase: And the moral of the story is…

Fables… Because they taught a lesson, fables were a good way for cultures to teach people the right way to behave.

Fables often … Have animal characters. These characters act like people. This is called personification.

Fables may … Have a trickster character. A common theme is for an unlikely, less able character to triumph over a stronger or more likely character by using brains over brawn.

Fables… A good example of this type of fable is The Lion and the Mouse. The lion has all the brawn, but the much weaker mouse is able to use his brains and skill to free the lion.

Fables… Another very famous fable is the story of the Tortoise and the Hare.

Fables… Can be found in the library in the 300’s at : Aesop is one of the most famous names associated with fables.
