The child is… - increasingly upset/depressed/worried - experiencing big changes that have led to inability to adjust - often in fights with others - behaving in ways that concern you *These problems can come and go as kids grow up, in some cases they can last a long time which can be a sign that your child is in distress. BEHAVIOR STRATEGIES: HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD NEEDS AND ASSESSMENT FOR BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES?

You are the expert on your child’s behavior patterns, trust your instincts. Begin by calmly talking about your concerns with your child. Ask questions like “How do you feel?” and Take time to listen. Next Step: Seek help from a behavioral health provider or other health care professional. WHAT DO I DO IF I THINK MY CHILD IS EXPERIENCING A BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PROBLEM?

Children enrolled in Medical Assistance are provided “all medically necessary” health services including behavioral health treatment. Children insured through Medical Assistance can get this treatment for free. Children’s Health Insurance Plan Program (CHIP) and most private insurance companies cover behavioral health, but the services vary by the child’s plan. BEHAVIORAL HEALTH COVERAGE

Check the green pages or online for what suits you and your plan best. You can also ask your insurance provider what places/ services they cover. An FBA is an attempt to look beyond the obvious interpretation of “bad” behavior and looks deeper into the cause of the behavior. Does my child need one? Why are these conducted? FUNCTIONAL BEHAVIORAL ASSESSMENT
