Methods of Teaching Multiplication

1 Row X 100 2 Rows X 50 4 Rows X 25 How many rows can be formed To get the One Hundred Hungry Ants To the picnic quickly?

Benefits of Integrating Literature in Math Lessons An entertaining method of introducing new math material to students Helps students relate to the math concept through the visualization of characters Gives the teacher the opportunity to teach two skills simultaneously Gives students the opportunity to work in groups with extension activities

Assign students multiplication facts to be written down for a daily homework grade. Three days of consecutive extra practice can be rewarded at the end of each week. Tonya Wilson – 4 th Grade Teacher – Dawes Elementary School Each student is to keep a math composition book in his/her desk. A table of multiplication facts is glued onto the inside, front cover. Before each math lesson, the class recites the facts being covered that week. Students then write facts five times each in the journal. Joe Gaston – 5 th Grade Teacher – Dawes Elementary School Flash cards are a fun tool that can be used while teaching multiplication facts. Students always enjoy playing “Around the World.” Students can also be placed with a partner and test each other with flash cards. Amanda Richardson – 2 nd Grade Teacher – Hutchens Elementary School

Rote Memory Rote memory involves repeating a concept over and over again until you remember it. Practice, practice, practice Flash cards – can be used with a partner, on the bus/in the car, during commercials Test/quiz often; Timed fact drills Competition among class mates and other classes

Using Arrays to Show Multiplication Concepts An arrangement of objects, pictures, or numbers in equal columns or rows is called an array.

Arrays are useful representations of multiplication concepts Have students bring an example of an array to class. Each student may present his/her example, then discuss as a class where we encounter arrays. Give students a bag filled with beans. Have them arrange the beans into equal groups and discuss different ways to organize the same number of objects.

Make it Real Show students how they can use multiplication in everyday life. Jim walked his neighbor’s dog 4 days last week. Jim was paid $5.00 for each walk. How much did Jim make? 4 X $5.00 = $20.00
