Aquatic Differences Freshwater Saltwater -freshwater has less salt -animals cannot drink -animals can drink from from this water this water -saltwater comes in -lakes and ponds are much bigger quantities bodies of still standing water -not still standing water -slow moving water has less oxygen -saltwater reaches much deeper depths
3
Freshwater Ecosystems Rivers Streams - rivers are not so fast -streams are rapid -rivers have pebbles -streams have rocks -rivers are larger -streams are smaller
4
Freshwater Ecosystems Ponds Lakes -ponds are shallower -lakes are deeper -ponds are smaller -lakes are bigger - plants can grow in ponds -plants cannot grow in lakes -sunlight can reach the bottom
5
STREAMS and RIVERS rely on leaves and seeds that fall into the stream/river Plants take root on pebbles on the bottom of a river Plants provide food and shelter for young and old insects & frogs and their tadpoles Consumers provide food for larger consumers The most common animals are small Water fleas and blue or green algae are common in freshwater
6
Ponds & Lakes The animals that live in ponds/lakes adapt by eating other organisms. Animals that live there are :dragonflies, turtles, snails, frogs, tadpoles, and other bugs. Sunfish live in open water and feed on insects and algae. Catfish live in the bottom of the ponds/lakes. Algae floats at the top.
