2 A Walk Through the Bible ●The book of Judges relates the history of Israel after Joshua. 1.Judges covers about 450 years following the conquest of Canaan.

3 A Walk Through the Bible 2.There are four segments of approximately 500 years each in the nation’s history.

4 A Walk Through the Bible a.From the birth of Abram to the death of Joseph. b.From the death of Joseph to the Exodus.

5 A Walk Through the Bible c.From the Exodus to the monarchy. d.From the monarchy to the exile.

6 A Walk Through the Bible 3.It is a record of alternating defeat and victory. 4.The book was probably written by Samuel.

7 A Walk Through the Bible ●The first two chapters review the situation in Israel after the death of Joshua.

8 A Walk Through the Bible 1.Judah and Simeon joined together to subdue the Canaanites within their territory, but were only partially successful. 2.The Philistine cities of the coast, remained un-subdued.

9 A Walk Through the Bible 3.Benjamin, Manasseh, Zebulun, and Dan also failed to claim their full inheritance promised them.

14 A Walk Through the Bible 2.The Lord raises up Ehud from the tribe of Benjamin. 3.Ehud tricks King Eglon and assassinates him with a hidden dagger.

15 A Walk Through the Bible 4.Ehud returns to Israel, blew the trumpet of assembly, and led an army to attack the Moabites killing about 2,000 of their warriors. 5.There was peace in the land for 40 years under Ehud.

24 A Walk Through the Bible 9.More are sent home, now he has an army of 300 men. 10.Shortly after midnight Gideon gave the word and trumpets were blown and torches flashed and the Midianites self-destructed.

25 A Walk Through the Bible ●Jephthah – The Son of A Harlot 1.In chapter 11 God laid hold of Jephthah. The son of a Harlot. 2.The Ammonites from the east launched an attack against Israel.

26 A Walk Through the Bible 3.The elders of Gilead, Jephthah’s brothers asked him to lead the Israelites against Ammon. 4.Jephthah makes a strange vow to offer in burnt sacrifice whatever came out of his door to greet him on his return.

27 A Walk Through the Bible 5.His daughter an only child met him at the door. He refused to break his vow. 6.Verse 39 says he did to her according to the vow he had made.

28 A Walk Through the Bible ●After the death of Jephthah, a series of three little known judges arose in various parts of Israel, judging for varying periods of seven to ten years.

29 A Walk Through the Bible ●Samson – A Child of Promise 1.Chapters 13-16 focus on the life of Samson. 2.The angel of the Lord appears to the wife of Manoah of the tribe of Dan.

35 A Walk Through the Bible 11.Seven days they tried in vain to solve it. Finally they bribed his new wife for the answer. 12. To pay the debt Samson kills 30 men of Ashkelon and gave their garments to his friends.

36 A Walk Through the Bible 13.Samson goes to visit his wife and learns she has been given away. 14.He caught 300 foxes, tied them together in pairs by the tails with torches between and sets fire to the Philistine’s fields of grain.

42 A Walk Through the Bible 4.When he awoke he did not know the Lord had departed from him. 5.The Philistines capture him, gouged out his eyes and put him in prison.

43 A Walk Through the Bible 6.After several months his hair began to grow. Samson was brought before the Philistine lords to make sport of him.

44 A Walk Through the Bible 7.Samson asked to be placed between two great pillars that supported the house. He prayed to the Lord and pushed the pillars apart. 8.The house collapsed and killed 3000 Philistines. Samson included.

45 A Walk Through the Bible ●It is interesting to note that the Israelites were under some sort of servitude for 111 years. ●The final story in the book of Judges is one of the most sordid accounts in scripture.

46 A Walk Through the Bible 1.A Levite’s bride/concubine had left him and returned home. 2.Wanting to repair the relationship the Levite traveled some distance to retrieve her.

47 A Walk Through the Bible 3.On the return trip, unable to find lodging in Gibeah, a Benjamite city. They decided to sleep in the street. 4.An old man begged them not to do that for reasons reminiscent of Sodom and Gomorrah.

48 A Walk Through the Bible 5.The old man took them home to lodge for the night. 6.The men of the town banged on the door demanding the male guest come out.

49 A Walk Through the Bible 7.The old man gave them his concubine who was raped all night until she died. 8.The man was so upset he cut her into 12 parts and sent them to the 12 tribes.

50 A Walk Through the Bible 9.The tribes were outraged and went to the Benjamites to find out who had done it. 10.The Benjamites were attacked and only 600 were left after the attack.

51 A Walk Through the Bible ●It’s interesting to note that the first king of Israel was from the tribe of Benjamin.
