3  Make sure the location has the following attributes: ◦ Sunlight ◦ Shade ◦ Water ◦ Air

4  Typically made of wood and about 12” in height  Convenient for watering and harvesting  Easier to have a good quality mix of soil  Less soil compaction  Can be set up on any surface  Can be built to be handicap accessible

5  Traditional garden  Has 2’ gap to make harvesting and watering easy  Consumes a lot of space

6  Easy to make, manage and add beauty to any area  Must have holes in bottom of container to allow for water drainage  Take up a small space  Examples: ◦ Whiskey Barrels ◦ Baskets ◦ Washtubs ◦ Wooden Crates

7  Good use of wasted/unused space  EXPENSIVE to establish  Must check local ordinances  Should get an architect to help  Should have windbreaks  Consider ease of watering and accessibility to roof- top

8  Saves valuable garden space  Have a tendency to be shadowed by building, check sun’s movement before planting  Examples: ◦ Trellis ◦ Cages ◦ Teepees ◦ String poles ◦ Arbors

9  Soil you use will be based on plants you are wanting

16  Beans  Corn  Pumpkin (harvest in the fall)  Cucumber  These are all examples of warm season crops

24  Stake plants as needed in the garden.  Control pests ◦ Keeping your garden clean of debris and dead plants. ◦ Check for pest problems and practice non chemical methods to control pests.  Harvest plants as they mature.  Do not let plants over ripen or decay on the plant as this will lead to pest issues.
