Situational Irony: Examples In a piece of literature, a man branches from the main road to avoid being hit by a speeding car and is suddenly hit by a truck! A woman has been saving painfully to buy a golden watch. Just hours after buying the watch, her daughter arrives home with the same watch as a gift for her!

Dramatic Irony: Basic Information Dramatic irony occurs when the audience’s or reader’s knowledge of events or individuals surpasses that of the characters. This type of irony is VERY prevalent in works of tragedy. BACK

Dramatic Irony: Examples In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo finds Juliet in deep and drugged slumber, assumes her dead, and kills himself ignorantly. Verbal Irony: Basic Information Verbal irony occurs when the speaker says the opposite of what he or she means. The speaker says what is intentionally contradictory to his or her actions and emotions. This type of irony is often stated in the form of a metaphor or simile. BACK
