Presentation Objectives To provide ideas on how to structure and organize this type of board To provide some ideas on what to do with this board

Why Have a Student Advisory Board? The purpose of any advisory board should be to help you achieve the mission and goals of your unit. A student advisory board focuses on the means by which students contribute to the success of the unit.

Why Have a Student Advisory Board? Emphasizes the importance of student contributions to the welfare of the College Provides a role for students in the College’s governance structure

Why Have a Student Advisory Board? Develops a stronger commitment to the College among a group of student leaders Provides an opportunity to educate students on the mission and purpose of the College Provides development opportunities for your students

Roles of a Student Advisory Board Provides a direct connection to your students; opportunity for two- way communication Serves as a sounding board representing students’ perspective

Organization of the Board Structure Committees – The three participating schools do not use committees Board Officers – The three participating schools do not have board officers By-laws – None of the three participating schools have by-laws for this board Size of board -

Organization of the Board Meetings Frequency – Alfred’s SAB meets approximately every three weeks. ETSU and EIU meet monthly, September through November and February through April Duration – 1to 2 hours. ETSU holds one all-day session Facilitation – Dean chairs with use of facilitators for specific topics

Alfred University - Activities Purpose Of DACSL The purpose of the Dean’s Advisory Council of Student Leaders (DACSL) can be found in its name. This Council – people coming together for deliberation and discussion - will interact primarily with the Dean of the College of Business. Its membership will primarily be composed of individuals who are student leaders. Its members will engage in an advisory capacity to the Dean which means that all governance

Alfred University MISSION OF DACSL The DACSL exists to advise the Dean of the College of Business on matters related to students and to represent their fellow students to internal and external stakeholders.

Alfred University MEMBERSHIP Membership of the DACSL will be composed of the officers of College of Business Student Organizations, inducted members of the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Fraternity and Dean’ List students with junior/senior class standing.

Alfred University RESPONSIBILITIES of DACSL MEMBERS 1.to attend meetings of the DACSL as called by the Dean of the College. 2.to participate in the development of strategic goals, vision, and the mission of the College of Business. 3.to communicate student perspective on the enhancement of the educational and social needs of their fellow students.

Alfred University - Responsibilities 4.to interact with appropriate campus constituencies regarding career development and active-learning opportunities for students. 5.to participate in College of Business events, as much is practicable, such as the Galanis Awards and the Cutco Business lecture.

East Tennessee State University College of Business and Technology Seven departments Spread across six buildings 2,200 Undergraduates; 300 Graduate students 21.5 average age of undergraduates; 29 average age of graduate students Largely a commuter school with many students holding part-time jobs
