2 JOB DESCRIPTION A teacher’s first job is to educate his or her students in a specific subject matter. Other tasks are to prepare course material, correct assignments and report a students’ grades to the students and parents or legal guardians. Teachers are responsible for a single subject matter or sometimes several of them; such as; English, French, Math, Science, Ethics, History, and many complementary courses also known as “Options”.

3 A TYPICAL DAY The day might start off with a staff meeting of some sort, where staff members as a whole or in departments meet to share information about any problems, new courses materials, changed to courses, etc. On average, a teacher teaches for 4 periods a day, but sometimes only 2 or as much as 5, depending on the way the schedule tumbles. The remainder of the day is spent on correcting, planning for future classes, photocopying materials and being on duty in a specified area of the school to prevent shananigans!

4 SCHOOLING A Bachelor’s of Education is required in the Province of Quebec to teach Kindergarten through grade 11. This is a 4 year program that can be obtained through many universities found across the province. For a teaching certificate in English you would attend either McGill or Concordia University, for French you would attend Université de Montreal or Quebec. There are no specific courses required to enter these programs but they are competitive and a certain grade point average must be had in order to be considered.

5 Salary A teachers’ salary is based on the number of years spent in school, the number of degrees obtained and the number of years worked which is called seniority.
