Counter- (verb) To say or do something in opposition to something else. Synonym- argue Antonym- agree My little sister always counters my ideas, and we argue until my mom tells us to stop.

Cunning- (adjective) Sly, Crafty, or Clever Synonym- manipulating Antonym- straightforward Sneaking around the barn, the cunning fox manipulated the humans and stole the hen without them knowing.

Debris- (noun) Remains of destroyed or discarded materials; wreckage Synonym- Rubble Antonym- Pristine Materials The debris of the homes after the hurricane was a reminder of the lives of the people who lived there, but now their lives were shattered just like their homes.

Defiance- (Noun) An act of refusal or resistance to an opposing force or authority Synonym-Resistance Antonym- Agreeable The child showed defiance towards his mother when she said he couldn’t have the toy by crying at the top of his lungs and refusing to go anywhere else.

Jut- (verb) To extend sharply outwards; to project or to stick out. Synonym-Protrude Antonym- Blend In The peaks of the mountain jut out at the sky and were extremely pointy looking.

Kindle- (verb) To build or start a fire; to excite a feeling or idea. Synonym- Ignite Antonym- Douse After reading an amazing book on her Kindle; the girl’s imagination began to kindle, and she then felt like she could do anything she believed she could do.

Knoll- (noun) A small rounded hill Synonym- hill Antonym- valley or plateau Sledding is fun, but she wishes to upgrade from her little knoll to a bigger hill.

Lumious- (adjective) Giving off light; shinning Synonym- Radiant Antonym- Dull As we walked around the square on Christmas Eve we saw many buildings luminously lit with golden and silver lights.

Specimen- (noun) Something studied by scientists or doctors as an example of a set of things or systems Synonym- Sample Antonym- After discovering an unusual species of insect, the scientist took a specimen back to his lab to study.

Stamina- (noun) The ability to resist fatigue or illness; endurance. Synonym- endurance Antonym- weakness To swim the mile really fast you will need a lot of stamina to prevent you from passing out.

Subside- (verb) To become less active or agitated. Synonym- Decrease Antonym- Crescendo As soon as the president started to speak the volume of the crowd subsided drastically to pin drop silence.

Swagger- (verb and noun) To walk in a way that makes it look as if you think you’re important or confident; strut. Synonym- Parade Antonym- Shuffle My dog walks with a swagger when he has something in his mouth. His head is held high and his legs move confidently; it is really funny.

Caduceus- (noun) A staff with two snakes twined around it and two wings at the top. Synonym- Hermes’ Staff Antonym- You will see a picture of a caduceus in many hospitals.

Mercurial- (adjective) Characterized by rapid and unpredictable changeableness of mood Synonym- Moody Antonym- Predictable mood Her mercurial attitude made us all confused to whether she was going to scream at us or not.

Lethargy- n Lethargic- adjective Lethargy - Abnormal drowsiness Lethargic- Sluggish, dull Synonym- Drowsiness Antonym- Lively After a long day of exhausting work, the businessman crashed lethargically on his bed and overslept.

Draconian- (adjective) Cruel, harsh, severe Synonym- Vicious Antonym- Gentle The Draconian principal wasted no opportunity to suspend a student. He even suspended them if they didn’t do their homework!
