We started off by… We did not implement everything all at once.
We started off with the Safe Place, Greetings and Treasure Chest as well as the Friends & Family Boards. We began to change our way of thinking, noticing and language with the students. We also started book studies with the first book being Conscious Discipline then Creating the School Family along with the I Love you Rituals book By Dr. Bailey. Our most recent book study being Managing Emotional Mayhem. Describe and show the components of Safe Place, Greetings and Treasure Chest & the Friends and Family Boards. * The language takes time to implement because this is something that is basically recorded in our inner CD. Feeling Buddies Self Regulation Curriculum
Getting Started You will use the Curriculum to teach basic self regulation skills and coach children to use these skills with their Feeling Buddies. As the children help their buddies handle tough emotions, they strengthen self-regulation skills within themselves. As you coach children in the process, you strengthen your own self regulation skills. Both you and the children emerge from the experience with a wealth of healing and self-regulatory skills. Feeling Buddies Self-Regulation Curriculum, 2012 Show Video “Overview by Dr. Becky Bailey”

There is so much stuff! Where do I begin?
The first step is to read Managing Emotional Mayhem This book creates the foundation for the curriculum to build on. Mayhem will help you understand the importance and significance of the skills you will teach and familiarizes you with the concepts and the Curriculum. Feeling Buddies Self-Regulation Curriculum, 2012 It takes us on a journey of emotional self discovery first and then empowers us with the skills needed to help children develop healthy emotional coping strategies. It is ESSENTIAL that you read the book before you begin to use the curriculum in the classroom.
14
BUDDY TIP! Organize a book study group! It is the best way to share ideas and share AH HA moments because it is a lot of information to have to digest. Feeling Buddies Self-Regulation Curriculum, 2012 Our school developed book study groups as a school and set aside professional development time so we could meet and discuss the book we chose.

Managing Emotional Mayhem
Our school family began this school year with a book study to learn about the five steps for self regulation The book gives us as adults an insight of how to handle ourselves first before we learn how to help others and teach the children self regulation. *This is a very EASY read. I actually read it in a day. I highlighted things that popped out at me or that made me stop and think. I think I even made notes on the side such as LOL, or DUH! Our school would meet for the book study, and we would tackle a chapter at a time. This made it more meaningful to have read the chapter and reflected on it prior to meeting and discussing with colleagues.

There is so much stuff! Where do I begin?
The next step is to Watch Dr. Bailey and Loving Guidance Associate Amy Speidel on YouTube. Watch the following videos: Expert Dr, Becky Bailey explains how to go conscious not crazy with our children, Most important fact every parent and teacher needs to know, Dog scared the SH!% out of me, Flush the Hamster, and 60 year old makes the basketball team. The 3rd and 4th steps are to Watch the instructional DVD to see the Toolkit in action and Become familiar with the songs on the Listen to your Feelings CD. Feeling Buddies Self-Regulation Curriculum, 2012 The DVD helps you see real life scenarios and you get to see the songs in lessons and how the Buddies are used. The CD is important to listen to before hand so that you are familiar and aware of what the songs that go with lessons in the Feeling Buddies Curriculum.

There is so much stuff! Where do I begin?
The 5th Step is to spend some time with your Buddies! Feeling Buddies Self-Regulation Curriculum, 2012 Look at their eyes, eyebrow and mouth. Notice them throughout the day in your life. This is VERY helpful when you are in your classroom. By you expressing to your class how you FEEL, and you name and state the feeling, it helps the students become familiar and allows them to ID the Feeling as well. For Example… As we read Emotional Mayhem, It gave us many ideas as to how to identify the Primary Feelings Such as Angry, Scared, Sad and Happy. Then in reading Emotional Mayhem, it also discussed their cousin feelings such as Frustrated, Anxious, Disappointed, and Calm.

The last step, Set up your Safe Place! Feeling Buddies Self-Regulation Curriculum, 2012 Watch the Video “Setting up your safe place” prior to setting the safe place up. You would basically prepare the Safe Place in your room before you introduce the lessons or units to learn about the safe place.
22
Safe Place Our Safe Place looks different in each of our classrooms.
For the most part they have the same components. The safe place is a structure that creates safe learning environments for children. The safe place represents a space where children are instructed, encouraged, and supported. In helping them through their upset through self-regulating activities.
