Blood Pressure with music

Big Question Will different kinds of music affect someone’s blood pressure?

Hypothesis I think the Jazz and country music will make your blood pressure lower and the rock and rap will make your blood pressure higher.

Experiment Blood pressure cuff 4 people: Mom, Dad, Elizabeth (sister), and Karen Frost (neighbor) MP3 player and head phones Music loaded onto MP3 player: Jazz Country Rock Rap Paper and pencil for recording results

Procedures Step 1: Place each song onto my mp3 player in the order for the person to hear them Step 2: Take resting blood pressure before listening to first song Step 3: Begin playing 1st song and take blood pressure immediately after song is finished and record the blood pressure reading Step 4: Repeat step 3 for each song, recording the blood pressure after each song. Step 5: Wait 5 minutes after finished listening to all songs and take another resting blood pressure

Analysis a. Yes, my data did test my hypothesis. b. I know this because on average the data showed that the peoples blood pressure increased with the fast beat of the Rock and Rap music and stayed close to their resting blood pressure or went down with the Jazz and Country music. It also showed that people who like different music styles are affected differently by the various music types.

Conclusion 6. Conclusion a. It was partially correct, because on average the blood pressures reacted as I expected. However, in my hypothesis I did not take into affect personal likes and dislikes in music taste and I think that makes a big different in the actual results. b. I would ask the person what type of music they like before doing the tests and test several people that like different types of music. I think this will help provide results that better represent actual reactions to the different music types. I would also control the surrounding where the tests are done better. I think the tests need to all be done in a room that has no other distractions that can affect the blood pressure. c. How much would different environments effect the persons blood pressure? Would it provide more consistent results if the tests were given in a completely dark room?
