1 POLITICAL CONCEPTS QUIZ Get out Target Sheet, index card and your Political Concept Notes Write 1-3 questions on index card about one concept. We will play “Hot Spot” were students answer orally at the front of the room without their notes. One person from each group of three will go to the front at a time. Table members will keep track of data – How many times did tablemate raise hand? How many times did tablemate answer correctly? Which topics does he/she show no evidence of knowing? BONUS: if you think you didn’t do well or if you don’t understand the concepts well, tonight for homework write an essay that explains the 8 political concepts that guide the US Constitution for extra points on your quiz.

3 WITH YOUR TABLE GROUP, COMPLETE AND DISCUSS THE PREVIEW IN YOUR NOTES ON PAGE 72 TO ANALYZE MADISON’S QUOTE…. “If men were angels, no government would be necessary.”

4 MADISON BELIEVED…. As Father of the Constitution, Madison believed that humans were imperfect, and that power can easily corrupt those who govern. As you saw in the principles that guided the Framers the Constitution set up a government that protects individual rights and ensures that power is not in the hands of too few for just that reason. Their attempt was to create a “more perfect union.” Have they?

6 READ SECTION 1 OF HISTORY ALIVE Use the pictures and information to attempt to answer the question – how did the Constitution form a “more perfect union?” Afterwards, see if you can find the Constitution at the back of the book. How is it set up?

7 SET UP OF THE CONSTITUTION The Constitution starts with the preamble, continues with 7 articles, then includes signatures and amendments. Use your target sheet and the Constitution in your text to write down the main idea of each section of the Constitution. Raise your hand if you can not figure out the main idea of any section.

9 CAN ANYONE RECITE THE PREAMBLE? Volunteers? Read Section 2 of your text and work with your partners to complete the back of page 72 in your notes. According to introduction to the Constitution, what are the goals for our government?

10 SOME OF YOU SUGGESTED WANTING TO BECOME LAWYERS IN THE FUTURE. Lawyers must pass an exam before they can practice law and graduate from law school. You are all about to see who will graduate from law school. You’ll read about the articles of the Constitution and answer related questions about the Constitution to practice before your official bar exam (quiz) over the Constitution on Thursday. In a week, Mr. Gantt, a local lawyer will come talk to you more about his career and knowledge of the Constitution as a lawyer.

11 YOU WILL READ AND DO A CONSTITUTION SCAVENGER HUNT! Read a section in the History Alive Text THEN complete the reading notes for that section. Check the reading notes with your teacher. Get a “bar exam” for that reading section and use the constitution at the back of your book to help you answer the questions. Check your answers with your teacher before moving on.
