Portsmouth E-book Background Trial of networked e-books began in 2004 Number of bought-in e-books has increased from 15,000 to around 476,000 Books from Credo Reference, Ebrary, MyiLibrary, MIT Press, Oxford Scholarship Online etc UoP had the highest use of e-books across UK universities in 2011-12 with just over 6 million section requests (SCONUL Strategic Planning Data 2011-12)

Student Views – HSS They’re great because you can access them from home Politics Yr 2 So useful especially if it’s a book everyone on the course needs and there are not enough hard copies Languages Yr 4 Can highlight and add notes, can save to your computer. Most of my course books are available English Language Yr 1 Don’t understand the online book queuing system? Why do you need to wait for an online book? Criminology Yr 1 Easy to use and search. Very convenient! History Yr 1

Student Views – HSS E-books are easier to flick through to find the right chapters relevant to assignment Languages Yr 2 The word search is very useful and often saves time reading irrelevant pages Sociology Yr 3 Copy and paste saves a lot of time when using quotes in any essay Languages Yr 2 You don’t have to pay fines!! Why is use so high at Portsmouth? Sheer number of e-books available (& on library catalogue) Promotion of e-books by lecturers e.g. 45% of students in Education in 2012 first found out about e-books from their lecturers Deliberate inclusion as key weekly reading on reading lists Demonstration of e-books by librarians Hands-on workshops a part of study skills units Significant number of distance learners

Why is use so high at Portsmouth? Driving usage higher Systematic checking of reading lists for e-book matches then including the link in the online reading list Buying new e-books for reading lists when we don’t already have an e-copy Buying e-books which match weekly reservation requests Algerian War book bought just before Easter 2012 reached 3081 section requests in 21 days European Revolutions 1848 book bought just before Christmas 2011 had 17099 section requests in January 2012
