Thermal Energy 3rd grade science

The measure of the energy of particles in motion in matter. When the particles in the air move more slowly, they have less thermal energy. Thermometer Fahrenheit (32 degrees; 212 degrees) Celsius (0 degrees; 100 degrees)

Temperature The boiling point is the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a gas. The freezing point is the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a solid.

Measurment related to the quantity of molecules.

Heat Thermal energy always moves from warmer to cooler objects. Heat is the result of molecules vibrating quickly. Heat is moving energy.

The transfer of heat by direct contact between objects or particles.

Heat transferred through space. EXAMPLE: The sun’s rays causing a sunburn.

Heat transferred by the movement of molecules within a substance. Movement occurs from warmer areas to cooler areas.

The movement of a substance that is caused by differences in temperature and density. EXAMPLES: wind boiling water NATURE WANTS EVERYTHING TO BALANCE !!

Insulators and conductors allow us to somewhat control the flow of heat or the change in temperature of objects.

Conductors are materials that transfer heat easily. Examples: metals like copper and gold The molecules in a conductor are close together. This allows the heat to move to all parts of the pot and the stew in the pot.

An insulator is a material that does not transfer heat easily. Examples: liquids and gases A jacket A cooler
