When it comes to Toad, we really focus on fact that it is a set of productivity tools. They are easy to install, connect to databases and get to work. With 2 million users and 3 million community visitors, Toad is the market leader.
The evolution of Toad began over 15 years ago. It was a freeware tool which competed directly against SQL Navigator. Quest purchased it in 1998 because it was gaining market share quickly. At that time, Toad had around 40,000 users, in large part to the fact that users were able to make recommendations, which were added to the next release, quickly. So, Toad did community development before it was cool.
We soon discovered many requests from users to have a Toad for other DB platforms, so we began to develop Toad for SQL Server, then DB2, and followed that with MySQL.
By 2005 we had over a million users, then discovered that developers weren’t the only ones using Toad, so we developed an edition specifically for DBAs, alongside the Development Suite for developer best practices.
Oracle released a free tool called Raptor in 2006 to claim the market from Toad. Now called SQL Developer, it continues to give us competitive pressure.
After conducting research with our customer base, we discovered that we were losing a segment of our base to SQL Developer, they called themselves Analysts and we set out to build a tool specifically for Analysts and gave it away with every Toad license.
Today, we support over 10 database platforms, with flavors for both traditional and NoSQL database platforms, so people who are invesetigating the newer databases in the Cloud can use a familiar tool.
