The Social Construction of Reality The process through which facts, knowledge, and truth are discovered, made known, reaffirmed, and altered by the members of society. (Berger and Luckman, 1966)

Sociology of Knowledge What we know as “truth” is a product of the culture and historical context in which we exist. “Knowledge” itself is a human creation. If “knowledge” and “truth” are created by humans, than humans can perpetuate or change them. We can change “truth.” We can change “reality.”

Contested Realities: Power Power can be defined as being able to get what you want despite oposition Power can come from the ability to control or influence the way a situation is defined or framed. Reality construction is not democratic! Powerful social actors can promote a version of reality that serves their interests.
