Importance of Good Nutrition Enhance Quality of Life/ Prevent Disease Provides Calories and Nutrients your body needs Calories- units of heat that measure energy used by the body and the energy that foods supply to the body You need calories….think of food as fuel!! Nutrients- substances in food that your body needs to grow, to repair itself, and to supply you with energy

Hunger and Appetite Hunger- is a natural physical drive that protects you from starvation Walls of stomach contract and stretch influencing nerve endings….hunger/full Appetite- a desire, rather than a need to eat Something smells good Being social Examples?

Food and Emotions Food can be used to meet emotional needs Sad, frustrated, angry, happy People may eat more or less depending on each person Examples of emotional eating? Using food to soothe emotions can be very detrimental to health Negative eating cycle Eat because sad….sad because eating

Nutrition throughout the lifespan Adolescence is your fastest period of growth…nutrition very important for proper growth Healthful balanced eating plan also helps prevent unhealthful weight gain, obesity, and type 2 diabetes Healthy choices now lowers your risk of developing many life-threatening conditions as you get older; heart disease, stroke, cancers, and osteoporosis
