Connectivity - Set up a connection between ReliaTel and the device 2. Monitoring - Monitor the device to assess level of performance Devices are performance specific Different devices provide different data; examples: SNMP traps Performance metrics such as CPU capacity, memory, or processes Capacity utilization such as bandwidth or trunk utilization VoIP quality of service (QoS) for metrics such as latency and jitter Ping latency 3. Alarms - Generate alarms when performance or QoS falls below established thresholds 4. Performance - Display performance and QoS data in dedicated dashboards 5. Report – Generate data for reporting 2

Foundation kits are installed, at implementation, for each device type your organization plans to monitor. The parameters of each kit are tailored to the way in which the device generates data and the kind of monitoring ReliaTel will be doing. Example: The foundation kit for an Avaya device gathering SNMP traps is designed differently from a kit for a Cisco Unified Communications Manager gathering performance and CDR/CMR data. The end result of an installed foundation kit is a device type class. New foundation kits can be installed post-implementation for additional device types your organization decides to monitor.

When you create an entity for a device, it is associated with the class of that device type. Using the interface you will be able to modify various aspects of a class’ data collection and dashboard display. Parameters set at the class level will propagate to entities associated with that class. Performance Dashboard Parameters for setting up the Performance dashboard are configured at the class level, through the foundation kit. These parameters are presented at the class level and can be edited at this level. These parameters also propagate to entities. Alarm rules – Whether or not alarms, based on performance metrics, will be generated and, if so, what severity thresholds (CRI, MAJ, MIN, and FYI). Performance examples: CPU usage, memory usage, interface utilization. Dashboard display – Each performance metric has one or more dedicated portlets displaying data in table, graph, and client formats. Metrics – Evaluating each performance metric begins with the data ReliaTel collects for that metric, from the device. The performance metrics are in the class.

Without the DAP there is no alarming, dashboard data, or reporting for the entity. One or more DAPs constitute a ReliaTel implementation. There will always be a DAP installed in the same physical location as the ReliaTel product. This is termed the local DAP or LOCALHOST. Other DAPs are set up remotely at other physical locations throughout your network. Entities can be connected either to a local DAP or a remote DAP. Connection methodReliaTel uses two different methods for configuring the connection between the DAP and the device. The method you choose depends on the data you want to gather from the device and the features you want to implement. If you want to gather SNMP trap data, schedule traceroutes, and generate reports on SNMP trap data, you will use the ‘Channel’ method. Using the ‘Channel’ method you will have complete coverage of all product features and functionality. If you want to collect SNMP data for performance metrics and not trap data you can use the ‘Host/DAP’ method.

This structure is visually represented in the Navigation tree associated with the Alarm List and Performance and Voice dashboards. Centers/subcenters are required before you can set up an entity and are recommended if you plan to limit user access to certain nodes within you network. It is within the center/subcenter configuration that the entities which you create are nested. EntityEntities represent the devices being monitored. Once the device class is installed (through the foundation kit) the entity you create to monitor a device will be of the same class as the device. Most often there is a 1:1 relationship between an entity and the device. However, occasionally, a device will have two or more entities when different operational functions for the same device are being monitored. Entities will inherit parameters and functionality established at the class level. Generally, you can override these elements at the individual entity level.

The connection between your device and ReliaTel is through the data acquisition point (DAP) What configuration options are available? 1. Channel method 2. Host/DAP method Channel method - why use it? All product features such as SNMP trap data collection, performance metrics, VoIP metrics, ping, AccessPlus, scheduled traceroutes, and all reports are available using the channel method Drawback – has some set up complexity Host/DAP method - why use it? Simplicity of set up – you need the IP address of the device and the local or remote DAP only; no other connectivity for ReliaTel is required Drawback – SNMP trap data is not collected, traceroutes cannot be scheduled, and some reports, associated with SNMP trap data, will not be generated 21

Use this as your ‘template’ for other entities of the same class. Change the name in brackets and the IP address for account and host to make the channel unique Remember the name in brackets; you will need that name when you create the entity Click Apply when you are finished entering all the entity channels. When you create the entity enter the channel name in the Logging tab. 25
