UCD Engineering Degree Programme Pathways At Decision Point 1 you chose: Civil Engineering Decision Point 1 Decision Point 2 Year 1Year 2 Year 3 Year 4Year 5 Stage 1 (60 Credit) Stage 2 (60 Credit) Stage 3 (60 Credit) Single-Stage ME (2-years, 120 Credit) Master of Engineering (ME)* specialising in... Civil Engineering (T161) Civil & Environmental Engineering (T283) Structural Engineering (T276) Engineering with Business (T166) * Minimum GPA Required for Entry to ME Programmes DN150 Stage One Engineering (Common) Graduate after 5 years with both BSc (Engineering Science) and ME Bachelor of Engineering Civil Stage 4 BE (60 Credit) Graduate with BSc (Engineering Science) Graduate with BE 2 MEngSc Structural Engineering MEngSc Water, Waste & Environmental Engineering MEngSc (90 Credit) Graduate with MEngSc

3 Your Choices in Brief… Graduate with BSc (Eng. Sci.) in 2013 –for work, further study, exit to pursue qualification in a different field –not professional Engineer Continue in BE programme –could graduate in 2014 –could work as professional Engineer –could do further postgraduate study –but further master qualification needed for Chartered Engineer (eg. MEngSc) Continue towards ME in UCD (if eligible) –could graduate in 2015 –different modules in stage 4, to support ME

5
Why Masters Degrees? Professional qualification –level required to become Chartered Engineer –level expected in most of Europe Two years of specialised study in chosen field –making five years in total –may include work placement –includes major project at Master level Entry requirement –based on last two stages, weighted 3 and 7 –from 2013, minimum GPA 2.8 –GPA of 2.8 or higher recommended! 5
6
Master of Engineering (ME) Degree Full tuition fees payable for one year –currently €6300 per year for EU students –“free fees” only applies to Bachelor degree i.e. only pay “student contribution”, not full tuition fee In September 2013 register as Engineering Science undergraduate student until end of stage 4 take modules appropriate to ME… then graduate with BSc degree –enter ME programme in September 2014 use surplus credits from stage 4 complete ME in 1 year pay tuition fees for final year only 6
7
Chartered Engineer – CEng Used in Ireland, UK, India, … –US, Canada: PE = professional engineer –Australia, NZ: CPEng = chartered prof. Engineer Registered title, protected by law –required by law for certain engineering activities Awarded by professional body –Engineers Ireland, must also be member! Requirements: –education to suitable standard - accredited degree from 2013, Master’s level or equivalent –development of competence in practice minimum 4 years responsible experience –continuing professional development - CPD 7
8
Chartered Engineer – CEng (contd.) Education Standard: –Masters Degree in Engineering (designed to be) accredited by Engineers Ireland ME Civil Engineering ME Civil & Environmental Engineering ME Structural Engineering ME Engineering with Business –Combination of an accredited Bachelors Degree in Engineering plus an unaccredited Masters Degree in Engineering BE Civil + MEngSc Structural Engineering BE Civil + MEngSc Water, Waste & Environmental Engineering
