Route 109 Bridge Reconstruction at Wood Road The Missouri Department of Transportation

Why is this work needed? Bridge constructed in 1930s. The bridge needs increased shoulders, new railings and the foundation needs protection from erosion. Part of MoDOT’s continuing effort to repair/replace bridges to maintain good transportation infrastructure.

What is the plan?

Details Project is slated to start in summer 2010 – Possibly between July 4 and Labor Day MoDOT will close Route 109 just north of Woods and south of the bridge Woods Road will remain open during most of the project Detour around the work is Old State Road to Route 100 (or vice versa) Project should take four to six weeks to complete, weather permitting. Wildwood may complete bike-ped underpass on Route 109

Why close Route 109? The width of the road limits through traffic to one lane during construction At evening rush hour (during the highest traffic volumes) the average delay for vehicles would be about 7 minutes per vehicle (in both directions) Traffic would back up between one-third to one-half mile daily on Route 109 Keeping both Route 109 and Woods Road open would require signals (which would significantly increase back ups on both Route 109 and Woods Road)

Are there other options? MoDOT looked at staging traffic through the project (one lane, two way traffic) – close Woods Road Not viable option due to extensive backups and long waits Project would take about double length of time Traffic would back up about one-third to one-half mile MoDOT looked at staging traffic through the project (one lane, two way traffic) - keep Woods Road open Project would take about double the length of time Traffic backups increase to an average of one mile daily

Are there other options? TimeDelayTraffic Backups Cost Close Route 109, keep Woods Road open 30 days None - detour $600K Keep Route 109 open, close Woods Road 75 days Up to 7 minutes 1/3 to ½ mile backups $850K Keep Route 109 open, keep Woods Road open 75 days Up to 11 minutes 1 mile backups $850K

How will MoDOT minimize impact? MoDOT minimizes length of construction by closing Route 109 MoDOT reduces traffic flow impact by completing construction between July 4 and Labor Day (no school, holiday travel) MoDOT will encourage the contractor to complete project as promised with monetary incentives, disincentives (reward for meeting deadlines, penalties for not meeting deadlines)
