The Inner City In this lesson I will –Describe what urban decay is. –Describe the problems of housing in the inner city. –Describe how these problems have been solved by urban renewal.

How do we recognise this area on a map ? Old transport links Railways, canals, dis-used railways. Straight roads. Derelict land. Tenement, high density housing.

Glasgow’s Inner City Problems The inner city suffers from urban decay. This means it is run down and in poor condition. poor housing, pollution, derelict buildings, lack of government investment, high unemployment.

Tenement Housing Was built quickly to house the huge number of workers that came to Glasgow to work in the ship yards. Built quickly Built Cheaply Poorly maintained Over crowded Disease ridden, rat infested No running water Shared toilets No waste disposal or sanitation.

Urban Renewal much better idea???? Knocking flats together Adding double glazing Fitting indoor bathrooms with hot and cold running water. Re-roofing buildings. Urban Renewal Bringing life back to the old parts of the cities!

GEAR Glasgow Eastern Area Renewal 1976 -1987 Involved the local community. Modernization not demolition. New jobs, industries, businesses 12 000 new rehabilitated homes. More amenities sport centres etc Successful!!

Traffic Congestion Problems. Increasing car ownership Grid iron street pattern too narrow. Only four bridges cross the Clyde therefore congested.

Unemployment Problem Decline of heavy industry due to lack of coal, iron ore and steel. These could be provided cheaper abroad. Ship building could not compete on a world scale. Unemployment was at an all time high 1960’s and 1970’s.

Unemployment Tackled Major investment in service sector. SECC, city of architecture 1998. Business centres resulting in hotel growth. Glasgow Airport investment and expansions. Call centre capital of Europe. New Hotels all over the city.

Social Inequalities Problems Rising unemployment in the 1980’s Industrial decline. Low cost high density housing. Unhealthy diest linked to poverty. Drumchapel life expectancy 60, Bearsden 75. 49% of Glasgow’s housing suffer dampness.

Social Inequalities Tackled Government invested money in housing associations to renovate housing stock. Has been a success in Castlemilk. Still big lack of investment in poorer areas.
