Lesson 1 (Parent Functions) Linear Functions: How do you find slope of a line? Slope-intercept form y=mx + b m is your slope, b is your y-intercept. Slope is defined as the change in y over the change in x. m= y 2 -y 1 x 2 -x 1

Lesson 1 (Parent Functions) Examples Find the slope of a line that contains the points (5, 7) and (-1, 3) Find the slope of the given line:
3
Lesson 1 (Parent Functions) How do you find the y- intercept of a line? Example Look to find the y value where the line crosses the y axis. X value for your y intercept is always 0.
4
Lesson 1 (Parent Functions) Examples of linear equations:
5
Lesson 1 (Parent Functions) What is a parent function? The simplest graph for a family of graphs. For all linear graphs, the parent function graph is y=x.
6
Lesson 1 (Parent Functions) Quadratic Functions: Quadratic equations are put into standard form: y=ax 2 +bx+c Forms a parabola (U shape). The parabola is a symmetrical curve.
7
Lesson 1 (Parent Functions) Parts of a parabola: Vertex: The point at which the parabola curves. Can be a minimum point or a maximum point depending on the way the graph is facing.
8
Lesson 1 (Parent Functions) Line of Symmetry: A vertical line that goes through the vertex of a parabola. Once this line is drawn, every point on the left side will have a symmetrical reflection on the right side.
9
Lesson 1 (Parent Functions) What is the parent graph of a quadratic function? y=x 2
