Respiratory Equipment and Usage

Bag Valve Mask: used on patients that are not breathing or need assistance Can attach to oxygen to provide high concentration of oxygen or used without

Respiratory Equipment and Usage

Pocket Mask: used in CPR or a non-breathing patient Provides a barrier between you and the patient You can attach supplemental oxygen

Respiratory Equipment and Usage

Oral pharyngeal airway: used on an unconscious patient without a gag reflex Properly measure from edge of mouth to the angle of the jaw or tip of the ear Insert upside down until to the back of the oral airway then twist and have it lay flat on the lips

Respiratory Equipment and Usage

Nasal pharyngeal airway: can be used on a conscious patient with a gag reflex Measure from septum to tip of the ear or angle of the jaw Insert with bevel following the septum of the nares; if having to use left side remember to insert upside down and then twist toward septum Do not insert if meets resistance or head injury

Respiratory Equipment and Usage

Non-rebreather mask: can deliver up to 100% oxygen Must use 12-15 lpm of oxygen Directions: attach to oxygen source and properly turn on; put finger over seal inside mask until it fills bag; then apply to your patient. Monitor your tank to make sure it does not run out or you will sufficate your patient.

Respiratory Equipment and Usage

Venturi mask: delivers a precise concentration of oxygen depending upon the adapter you attach Choose your adapter according to the percentage that the doctor ordered or needs; attach to the oxygen and turn to the proper amount of liters per minute in accordance to your adapter

Respiratory Equipment and Usage

Nasal cannula: can be used on any patient that needs a small amount of oxygen support Used with.5-6 lpm but not recommended over 4 lpm Attach to patient after oxygen is running; be award of the proper insertion due to the curves; and attach to humidifier for long term use

Respiratory Equipment and Usage

Aerosol mask to be used with a nebulizer or can be attached to oxygen if needed. Nebulizer pumps at 8-10 lpm of air Make sure proper amount of medication and diluted properly; mist should appear when proper attached and patient must use until mist is dissipated. Used on asthmatics and COPD patients

Respiratory Equipment and Usage

Suction catheter: used to remove liquids or body fluids from the mouth and nose Attach to suction canister and properly measure the length allowed Suction only on the way out for 10-15 seconds at a time by covering the hole and utilize a circle technique to maximize effectiveness Rinse with sterile water or sterile saline

Respiratory Equipment and Usage

Yankaur suction: hard suction with a larger opening and can only be used in the oral pharynx Follow same technique as with catheter

Respiratory Equipment and Usage

Pulse oximeter: measures the concentration of oxygen in the blood by utilizing and ultra violet light. Remove nail polish if needed and may give false reading if the patient is hypothermic Reading should be between 95-100% oxygen saturation Don’t forget to treat your patient not the equipment
