Someone who is religious usually makes decisions based on what their religion tells them this is called ‘Religious Authority.’ Information will often come from their holy book or an important person in their religion. Ned Flanders RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY Ned Flanders is a good example of someone who follows religious authority. He tries to follow his religion throughout his life.

For Jews and Christians, these teachings are very important They are thought to be over three thousand years old They can be found in Exodus, ch 20 and Deuteronomy, ch 5. RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY – THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

Believers say that God gave the command- ments to Moses at Mt Sinai (in present-day Egypt). Near the summit of Mt Sinai, where Moses received the 10 Commandments. The mountain is about 7,000 feet high. RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY – THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

These stone ‘tablets’ were then kept inside a specially made box called the ark of the covenant This was kept at the temple in Jerusalem Experts think the ark was destroyed long ago – perhaps before the time of Jesus. Here are the 10 Commandments. With a partner, decide which are the most important and which are the least important. List them in order of importance in your jotter: no 1 – most important no 10 – least important. RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY – THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS You must not commit adultery. You shall not make for yourself any idol, nor bow down to it or worship it. You shall remember and keep the Sabbath day holy. You must not steal. You must not be envious of your neighbour's goods. You shall not be envious of his house nor his wife, nor anything that belongs to your neighbour. Respect your father and mother. You must not give false evidence against your neighbour. You shall have no other Gods but me. You must not kill. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.

The Ten Precepts The Ten Precepts are rules for life which Buddhists will always try to follow. They tell them how to act in every day situations and how to make moral decisions.
