Whole Numbers and Tables: Writing, Rounding, and Inequalities Section 1.1

Objectives Write word name from place value name Write place value name from word name Write inequality statement about 2 numbers Round a given whole number Read tables

Objective 1: Write Word Names From Place Value Names and Place Value Names From Word Names

Objective 1 Digits Natural numbers (Counting numbers) Whole numbersWhole numbers Hindu-Arabic System Digits and Commas Positional Base 10 (Decimal) System Place Value Place Value Name Expanded Form Word Name Three Digit Groups

Objective 1 To write the word name from a place value name –From L to R, write the word name for each set of three digits followed by group name (except units) –Insert a commas after each group name

Objective 1 To write a place value name from a word name –Identify the group names –Write three-digit number before each group name, followed by a comma –(The first group, on the left, may have fewer then three digits) –It is common to omit the comma in 4-digit numerals

Objective 1 Combination of place value notation and word name

Objective 2: Write an Inequality Statement About Two Numbers

Objective 2 Less than:< Greater than:> To write an inequality about two numbers: –Insert < between the numbers if the number on the left is smaller –Insert > between the numbers if the number on the left is larger

Objective 3: Round a Given Whole Number

Objective 3 ≈ means approximately equal to Approximate by rounding To round a number to a given place value –Draw an arrow under the given place value –If digit to right of arrow is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, add one to digit above arrow (round to larger number) –If digit to right of arrow is 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, do not change the digit above arrow (round to smaller number) –Replace all digits to right of arrow with zeros

Objective 4: Read tables

Objective 4 Find correct column and row that describes needed information Then read data at intersection
