LO: To understand how understanding of the world was different in 1400 To be able to explain how Italy was organized. (link to geog project.) To give reasons why the Renaissance started in Italy.

Martellus’ map does not show: The Atlantic Ocean The Pacific Ocean The Americas Australasia Antarctica Why? The map was drawn in 1489. America was not discovered until Christopher Columbus’ voyage of 1492. People did not know about the large oceans and had not discovered Australia and the Antarctic. Remember: In 14 hundred and 92, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

The Renaissance began in what we now call Italy. Italy is a PENINSULA in southern Europe. A PENINSULA is a piece of land that juts out from the main land and is surrounded by water on 3 sides. Italy is surrounded by: The Adriatic Sea. The Mediterranean Sea.

Renaissance Italy was very rich. It made its money from trade. Look at the map below. Can you INFER why trade was easy for Italy. NEW WORD INFER To make an educated guess. Trade is easier by water than by land. Italy was surrounded by water on 3 sides so boats could go to almost any part of Italy. People of Italy could sell their own products to other countries easily. Trade also encourages culture and ideas to spread.

Do you think this area has a high population density (# of people per square km) why or why not? 3. Do you think the people that live here speak many languages? (look at what other countries are around this place, are there cities or just small towns?) 4. What do you think the temperature is like in this place in summer and winter? How do you know that? 5. How much precipitation does this place get in one year?
