Contract Benefits for Part-Time Faculty Our Working Conditions = Students Learning Conditions

Health Benefits Article 10 Employed two previous semesters within the last six semesters, and as of Monday of the third week of the third qualifying semester have assignments of five hours or more per week. Eligible to receive Kaiser medical insurance or composite dental or vision plan. Can purchase additional coverage. Premiums paid will be pre-tax.

Associate Faculty Article 6 After five consecutive semesters of employment with the District, with an assignment of at least 5 LHE per week within a discipline for each of the five consecutive semesters with no less than a satisfactory evaluation during the qualifying five semesters. No more than 60% of the part-time faculty in a discipline within a department shall have Associate Faculty status.

Re-employment Rights Reemployed for the Fall and Spring semester with a total assignment not less than the total number of hours for the fourth and fifth qualifying semester (Base assignment). Shall be offered an assignment before any part- time faculty member without associate faculty status is offered an assignment. If more part-time faculty with associate faculty status in a discipline than there are available assignments in that discipline, the seniority of part-time faculty shall be considered.

Associate Faculty status termination Receives an evaluation that is less than satisfactory. Fails to perform the normal and reasonable duties of assignment or guilty of misconduct as defined by Education Code 87732. Declines all of assignment offered in the discipline within the timeframe requested. Associate Faculty status has not been renewed for two Fall/Spring cycles.

Keeping your status while taking a break Can requests not to receive an assignment in the department and keep your AF status. The request must be in writing and is received by the department chair at least 60 calendar days before the beginning of the semester. Only one request of this kind in any five-year period. A request not to receive an assignment for two consecutive semesters shall be counted as a single request.

PARITY ARTICLE 14 The District and the Faculty Association are committed to achieving 100% parity for part-time faculty. 100% parity would include the addition of all professional duties performed by full-time faculty, on a pro-rata basis. instructional parity which includes class room teaching, preparation, and grading is defined at 75%. For part-time faculty with load factor one assignments, parity for instructional plus office hours on a pro-rata basis is defined at 85%.

Parity For academic year 2014-15, compensated at 82.5% of the full-time faculty salary schedule. Includes pay for 12 minutes of office hours per unit per week. For academic year 2015-16, compensated at 83.125% of the full-time faculty salary schedule. Includes pay for 13 minutes of office hours per unit per week. faculty are not compensated for any office hour during intersessions and are not required to hold office hours.

Office Hour for other Graded Hourly Assignments For academic year 2015-16, assignments with a 0.75 load factor will be compensated at the rate of 2.43 minutes per teaching hour per week. For academic year 2015-16, assignments with a load factor more than 0.75 but less than one will be compensated at the rate of 8.53 minutes per teaching hour per week.

Sick Leave Article 17 part-time faculty are entitled to sick leave at the rate of seven hours for each one hundred hours of service. Every six hours of accumulated unused hours of sick leave is equivalent to one day of unused sick leave. STRS DB members get credit for unused sick leave when retire.

Sick Leave Sick leave accumulated in other California school districts can be transferred to SMC. Sick leave can be used for matters of compelling personal importance.

Distance Education Article 20 Faculty who develop a new distance education course shall receive 20% Reassigned time (or $3000 stipend upon the first offering of that course. When a department chair and faculty member agree and the Curriculum Committee has approved an existing distance education course requiring substantial changes in the course content and/or delivery, the faculty member shall receive a $1300 stipend for making the revision(s).

Team Teaching Article 24 Definition: Team teaching is a pedagogical technique that includes two or more faculty members After consultation with the department chair, the Vice President, Academic Affairs or designee shall have final responsibility for approving a faculty request for team teaching For part-time faculty who teach in an approved team teaching assignment, credit for team teaching will be paid as a stipend of $1250.

Retirement Article 25 STRS (State Teacher’s Retirement System) Defined Benefits plan If first hired on or before December 31, 2012: contribution rate for 2014–15 is 8.15 percent. It increases to 9.2 percent in 2015–16 and to 10.25 percent in 2016–17. If first hired on or after January 1, 2013: For 2014–15, your contribution rate for 2014-15 is 8.15 percent. It is anticipated that contribution rate will be 8.56 percent in 2015–16 and 9.205 percent in 2016–17. employer contributions on compensation creditable to the Defined Benefit Program will increase every year for the next seven years, up to 19.1 percent in 2020–21.
