2 Early Life  Born on July 18, 1918  From a small village in South Africa  Mandela lost his father at a young  Enrolled in the University of Witwatersrand to become a lawyer

3 Armed Resistance  Mandela participated in an anti -apartheid movement  Apartheid meaning “seperateness”  Minority white govt. ruled majority black citizens.  Blacks and different cultures were placed in ghettos, different shops, buses,etc..  Mandela and the ANC started their sabotage plan. It eventually led to their imprisonment.

4 Imprisonment  Nelson Mandela and other members of the ANC were punished for their sabotage.  They were almost sentenced death, instead being in prison for life.  He moved from prison to prison.  Released after 27 years on Feburary 11, 1990

5 After prison  won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993  Became the president of South Africa in 1994  Died on December 5, 2013 at age 95
